The 2026 anime year at a glance
We left out shounen blockbusters and romance on purpose, since every other "new anime 2026" list covers them. What is left is the part of the year adult viewers ask us about: seinen, dark fantasy, psychological thrillers, hard sci-fi and mecha. Mecha was thin all year, and we say so rather than pad it.

Winter 2026: January to March
Winter was a big-franchise season, so the adult picks sit among sequels. The standouts are the ones that are grim by design.
- Sentenced to Be a Hero (premiered January 3, 2026): a dark fantasy where "hero" is a punishment for condemned criminals. It opened with an hour-long first episode. Episode counts differed in early reports, so we treat it as reportedly 12.
- Golden Kamuy Final Season (January 2026): the closing run of the Hokkaido gold hunt, with Russo-Japanese War veterans and Ainu culture. It is not a place to start. Our catalogue holds the closing arc as Golden Kamuy: Runaway Train Arc.
- Trigun Stargaze (January 10, 2026): the finale of the Trigun Stampede story. If you only know the original, start with Trigun (1998).
- Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe (film, January 30, 2026 in Japan): the winter mecha pick, a terrorism story told from the attacker's side. It reached Netflix on August 31, according to Anime News Network. Watch the first Hathaway film before the second.

Spring 2026: April to June
Spring was the strongest season for dark fantasy and political drama, and it had one clear robot show.
- Dorohedoro season 2 (April 1, 2026, ONA, 11 episodes): MAPPA's return to the gory, weird city of Hole. A third season was teased in June. Start with Dorohedoro season 1.
- Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun (April 5, 2026, Prime Video, 12 episodes): a near-future Japan split into three rival powers. More politics and war strategy than fight scenes, and a sequel has been announced.
- Snowball Earth (April 3, 2026, Friday night on NTV, 13 episodes): the season's mecha pick, a survival story about a pilot trapped in his escape pod after a space battle with invading aliens. A second season was reported in June.
- Liar Game (April 2026): a psychological game series planned as two cours, reportedly 26 episodes in total, with the second cour starting July 6.

Summer 2026: July to September
Summer was heavy on sequels, so adult viewers had to look past the headlines. The best new-adaptation news was cyberpunk.
- The Ghost in the Shell (July 7, 2026, reportedly): Science SARU's reboot of Masamune Shirow's 1989 manga, with Prime Video holding worldwide rights outside China and Russia according to press reports. Older entries live in our catalogue: the 1995 film and Stand Alone Complex.
- Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia (July 4, 2026): a historical drama, and one of the best-reviewed shows of the summer on AniList.
- Saga of Tanya the Evil II (July 8, 2026, Crunchyroll): the war fantasy with a morally grey narrator, 12 episodes.
- Cyborg 009: Nemesis (July 19, 2026): a short three-episode release for fans of the classic line. For the original, see Cyborg 009 (1968).

Fall 2026: October to December
Fall is the fullest season for our genres, and it is still running. The Fall 2026 hub lists every title page we have.
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 (October 20, 2026): Studio Trigger on Netflix, all 10 episodes at once, with a new cast. Expect gore and violence.
- Steel Ball Run: 2nd and 3rd Stage (Netflix, weekly from September 25, 2026): the cross-country race story continues into the season. It works best if you saw the first stage.
- The Vermilion Mask (October 10, 2026): a supernatural dark fantasy from 100studio, planned as two parts.
- Tank Chair (October 4, 2026): full CGI body-horror action from Polygon Pictures about a former hitman rebuilt as a combat wheelchair fighter.
- Fool Night (November 26, 2026, Netflix): Shaft and Sunrise adapt a seinen manga about people who choose to become plants during an oxygen shortage.
Mecha fans have more to watch here: the film Armored Trooper Votoms: The Gray Witch is scheduled for November 20, and Vertex Force and Dark Machine have title pages.
