How we chose, and what "best" means here

"Best" is a loaded word, so here are our three tests. First, craft: direction, animation and adaptation choices that show on screen. Second, adult themes: we favor seinen, war, political, psychological, horror and hard sci-fi stories over teen power fantasies. Third, reception data we can cite: the AniList average score and popularity count as of 5 November 2026. AniList scores come from site users, they skew toward people who finished a show, and they can still move for anything airing now.

We left out shounen blockbusters such as Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 on purpose. They are big, but plenty of other lists cover them. Mecha is thin in 2026, so only three picks are robot stories, and we say so rather than pad the list.

Winter 2026 (January to March)

1. Sentenced to Be a Hero

A dark fantasy in which "hero" is a punishment: condemned criminals are sent back into a hopeless war until they die. It premiered January 3, 2026 with an hour-long first episode and drew a large audience (AniList average 80, popularity above 168,000 users). The premise is about moral cost, not power levels. Best for readers who prefer morally gray fantasy. Content notes: war, executions, psychological cruelty. Episode counts differed in early reports; AniList now lists 12. Season detail is in our Winter 2026 picks.

2. Golden Kamuy Final Season

The closing run of the Hokkaido gold hunt, with Russo-Japanese War veterans, Ainu culture and a strange blend of comedy and brutality. AniList average 83 over 13 episodes. You need the earlier seasons, so this is a pick for people already invested. Content notes: war violence, torture, graphic hunting scenes. Our catalogue also holds the Runaway Train Arc side story.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe

The winter mecha pick and the one where "adult Gundam" is an accurate description: a terrorism story told from the side of the man who commits it, with giant robots as the instruments, not the point. The second Hathaway film opened in Japanese theaters on January 30, 2026 after a delay and arrived on Netflix on August 31, according to Anime News Network. AniList average 79. Watch the first film first. Content notes: terrorism, civilian casualties, a bleak ending tone.

4. Trigun Stargaze

Studio Orange's finale to the Trigun Stampede story, premiering January 10, 2026. It scores lower (AniList 67) than the other picks, and we include it with that caveat: it is for viewers who already love Vash and want closure, not for newcomers. It continues Stampede, not the 1998 Trigun series. Content notes: war themes, violence, loss.

Spring 2026 (April to June)

5. Dorohedoro Season 2

MAPPA returned to the grimy city of Hole, where sorcerers experiment on ordinary people and Caiman, a man with a reptile head, hunts for his past. It premiered on April 1, 2026 with three episodes and ran 11 in total, and a third season was teased in June (Anime News Network, 19 June 2026). AniList average 83. Start with season 1. Best for viewers who like black comedy with body horror. Content notes: heavy gore, mutilation, drug-like magic.

6. Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun

A 12-episode Prime Video original from Studio Kafka, set in a near-future Japan divided into three rival powers after nuclear war and disaster. It has the highest AniList score of our spring picks (84) and a sequel was announced in September. Best for viewers who like political strategy and war drama more than fight scenes. Content notes: war, executions, political violence.

7. Liar Game

Madhouse adapted Shinobu Kaitani's manga about cons, betrayal and high-stakes deception, in two consecutive cours, 26 episodes in all per AniList. The score is the lowest of the psychological picks (66), mostly because the game-of-the-week structure repeats. We still include it because very few 2026 shows are this purely about reading people. Content notes: gambling, financial ruin, manipulation.

8. Snowball Earth (mecha)

The season's one clear mecha series, made by Studio KAI for NTV's Friday night block from April 3, 2026, directed by Munehisa Sakai. Pilot Tetsuo Yabusame survives a space battle against alien invaders and is stranded in his escape pod. It ran 13 episodes and a second season was reported in June. AniList average 67: modest, but it is the most focused robot-survival story of the year. Content notes: war violence, isolation, death. Summer 2026 (July to September)

9. The Ghost in the Shell

Science SARU's new adaptation of Masamune Shirow's original manga, with Mokochan directing and Toh EnJoe writing the scripts. It premiered July 7, 2026 and Prime Video holds worldwide rights outside China and Russia, according to press reports. AniList average 77 over 10 episodes (AniList count). If you are new to the franchise, the 1995 Koukaku Kidoutai film remains the cleaner entry point. Best for fans of philosophical cyberpunk. Content notes: cyborg violence, mature themes.

10. Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia

Our pick for the strongest new original of the year, in craft terms. Science SARU animated it, with Naoko Yamada as chief director, and it follows a young woman using learning as a weapon in the thirteenth-century Mongol Empire. It premiered on July 4, 2026 with a two-episode hour, runs 12 episodes and scores 83 on AniList. Best for historical drama fans. Content notes: slavery, war, violence. Season context is in the Summer 2026 picks.

Fall 2026 (October to December)

11. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, 2nd and 3rd Stage

The highest-scoring entry here (AniList 86). Netflix began the weekly Friday release on September 25, 2026, with David Production animating a cross-country horse race full of body horror and violence. The Steel Ball Run page has the details. It works best if you saw the first stage that arrived in March 2026. Content notes: violence, body horror.

12. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

Studio Trigger's Netflix sequel premiered October 20, 2026 with all 10 episodes at once, following a new cast, so it can be a cold start. AniList average 83 and the highest popularity count of our fall picks (about 117,000), though one outlet called it a mixed return, so expect debate. Content notes: gore, violence, mature themes. See the Edgerunners 2 page.

13. The Vermilion Mask

A curse-and-mask story from 100studio, premiered October 10, 2026 with Crunchyroll as the partner, and planned in two parts. It is still airing, so the 68 on AniList may move. Best for viewers who like slow supernatural dark fantasy. Content notes: violence, eerie imagery. Page: The Vermilion Mask.

14. Armored Trooper Votoms: The Gray Witch (mecha)

Not out yet, and we include it as a watch-list pick: the first of two films is scheduled for Japanese theaters on November 20, 2026, with Mamoru Oshii directing, Production I.G and Sunrise producing and Kenji Kawai composing. It is reported as the first new Votoms anime in about 15 years, and no international release is announced. Start with the original Armored Trooper Votoms; the film has its own page: The Gray Witch. Real robot war, grim and slow.

Still to come this fall

Fool Night, the Shaft and Sunrise adaptation of a seinen manga about people turning into plants, is scheduled for Netflix on November 26, 2026. Tank Chair (CGI body-horror action, Prime Video), Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (film, opened October 23 in Japan), Expelled from Paradise: Resonance (film, November 13) and the CGI robot series Vertex Force are also worth tracking.
