What Does Seinen Mean in Anime?
Seinen means "youth" and labels manga and anime aimed at adult men. Here is how it differs from shonen and josei, and why it is not a genre.

Seinen (pronounced roughly "say-nen") is Japanese for "youth". In manga and anime it labels stories aimed at young adult men, usually described as roughly 18 to 30 and sometimes up to 40. It is a marketing category, not a genre: seinen stories tend to be darker, slower and more morally grey than shonen, and they can be about anything.

Seinen meaning in Japanese

The term is written 青年, and the full manga category is 青年漫画, glossed as "youth comics". Despite the word "youth", it refers to young men in the adult sense. Publishers use it for magazines whose readers are past their teens: office workers, students and older fans who want more than the boys' magazines offer.

Is seinen a genre?

No. Genre tells you what happens: horror, sports, romance, science fiction. Seinen tells you who the publisher expected to read it. That is why the same label sits on Berserk, a bleak dark fantasy, and on March Comes In Like a Lion, a gentle drama about a young shogi player. You can browse both on our seinen anime page.

Seinen magazines cover many of the same genres as shonen magazines. What changes is how they handle them: more adult characters, more realistic consequences, and more freedom to include graphic violence or sexual content.

Seinen vs shonen

Shonen means "boy" and targets adolescent boys. A typical shonen story builds on friendship, effort and growth, and rewards the hero regularly. Seinen is more willing to leave things unresolved or to let a victory cost something that never comes back.

ShonenSeinen
Meaning"Boy""Youth" (young adult man)
Intended audienceAdolescent boysYoung adult men
Typical toneHopeful, driven by effortOften darker, quieter or more ambiguous
Typical protagonistA teenagerAn adult, or a teen treated seriously
Content limitsTighter on gore and sexMay include graphic violence or sex

The most useful rule is that the label belongs to the manga's magazine. Attack on Titan ran in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, so it counts as shonen, even though it is bleak and violent. Berserk ran in Hakusensha's Young Animal, so it counts as seinen. Tone alone is not a reliable guide.

Seinen vs josei

Josei is the counterpart for adult women, as seinen is for adult men. Both are editorial categories, and both overlap with real audiences far wider than the label suggests. Plenty of women read and watch seinen, and plenty of men read josei.

Is seinen the same as mature anime?

No. Seinen describes the intended readership of the source manga. A content rating describes what is on screen. Many seinen series are violent or sexual, but many are not: Mushishi is quiet and nearly bloodless, and Sweetness & Lightning is a story about a father learning to cook for his daughter. Equally, some mature anime has no seinen source at all, because it was an original series or came from another kind of magazine.

What kinds of anime are seinen?

The range is wide. Here are examples that carry the seinen tag in our catalogue, with one example for each mood:

How can you tell if an anime is seinen?

  1. Find out whether it is based on a manga. If it is an original anime or comes from a novel, it has no manga demographic.
  2. Look up the magazine that serialized the manga. Weekly Young Jump, Young Magazine, Young Animal and Monthly Afternoon are typical seinen titles.
  3. Check the demographic tag on a database such as AniList or the publisher's page.

Adult protagonists, work and money, injuries that do not heal and endings that do not tie everything up are common signs, but none of them proves it.

Where to start

If you want sharp science fiction, try Stand Alone Complex. If you want calm, Mushishi. If you want action with an edge, Black Lagoon. Our seinen anime page has twelve picks with notes on who each suits. Many of them contain graphic violence, and some contain sexual content, so check the title page first.
