Ghost in the Shell Watch Order: Every Series and Film
Ghost in the Shell is a set of separate continuities. Here is the order for each one, which titles to skip, and where the 2026 series fits.

Ghost in the Shell has several separate continuities, so there is no single order. For a first watch, start with the 1995 film, or with Stand Alone Complex if you prefer TV. Innocence follows the film. Stand Alone Complex continues through 2nd GIG, Solid State Society and SAC_2045. Arise and the 2026 series are separate starts.

Last checked: 3 November 2026. The 2026 Science Saru series and a newly announced Science Saru project are both covered below.

Quick answer: where to start

Pick one line and stay with it. The titles do not form a single story, and Masamune Shirow himself, who wrote the original manga, counts the 2026 series as the "fourth version" after those by Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama and Kazuchika Kise.

The 2026 series has its own page: our Ghost in the Shell (2026) explainer covers its staff, dates and the new project. The franchise sits at the heart of seinen anime.

Continuity 1: the Mamoru Oshii films

  1. Ghost in the Shell, film, 1995, 82 minutes (Japan release 18 November 1995). Production I.G, directed by Oshii. Adapts the manga's Puppet Master story and makes Kusanagi more serious than in the book.
  2. Ghost in the Shell 2.0, film, 2008 (Japanese theaters 12 July 2008). A revised version of the 1995 film with new audio and some updated 3DCG. Watch either this or the original, not both. Reviews of the new animation were mixed.
  3. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, film, 2004, 98 minutes (6 March 2004). A standalone sequel set three years after the first film's ending. It competed at Cannes in 2004.

Continuity 2: Stand Alone Complex

Kenji Kamiyama created Stand Alone Complex as a "relative" of the manga and film, set in a parallel world rather than as a continuation. You do not need the 1995 film first.

  1. Stand Alone Complex, TV, 26 episodes (1 October 2002 to 1 October 2003). The Laughing Man storyline.
  2. The Laughing Man, compilation, 160 minutes (23 September 2005). A condensed retelling of season 1. Optional.
  3. 2nd GIG, TV, 26 episodes (1 January 2004 to 8 January 2005). The Individual Eleven storyline.
  4. Individual Eleven, compilation, 160 minutes (27 January 2006). A condensed retelling of 2nd GIG. Optional.
  5. Solid State Society, TV film, 105 minutes (1 September 2006). Set in 2034, two years after 2nd GIG.
  6. SAC_2045, season 1, Netflix, 12 episodes (23 April 2020). Set in 2045, 11 years after Solid State Society, in 3DCG with Sola Digital Arts. No catalogue page yet.
  7. SAC_2045, season 2, Netflix, 12 episodes (23 May 2022).

Two extras. Tachikomatic Days is a series of comic shorts starring the Tachikoma tanks, shown after each episode and usually tied to it. Solid State Society 3D is a 2011 re-release of the same film with a new opening sequence.

SAC_2045 is the weak point of this line. It also has two compilation films, Sustainable War (118 minutes, November 2021) and The Last Human (126 minutes, November 2023). Reviews of the series were generally negative: Anime News Network's Theron Martin called it "easily the weakest entry in the franchise so far". If you are short on time, you can stop at Solid State Society.

Continuity 3: Arise

Arise is a prequel: an alternate-universe origin story set in 2027, before Public Security Section 9 is formed. Shirow supplied the basic plot but left the staff largely free. Kazuchika Kise was chief director.

  1. Border:1 Ghost Pain, OVA, about 50 minutes (22 June 2013).
  2. Border:2 Ghost Whispers, about 50 minutes (30 November 2013).
  3. Border:3 Ghost Tears, about 50 minutes (28 June 2014).
  4. Border:4 Ghost Stands Alone, about 50 minutes (6 September 2014).
  5. Pyrophoric Cult, OVA, about 50 minutes (26 August 2015). It introduces a character who links to the film. No catalogue page yet.
  6. Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie, film, 100 minutes (20 June 2015), the finale of the Arise story. No catalogue page yet.

There is a shortcut. Alternative Architecture is a TV version (10 episodes, 5 April to 14 June 2015) that recompiles the four Borders and adds two new episodes. Watch it instead of the four OVAs if you prefer episodes to features. Wikipedia notes that Pyrophoric Cult was cut and split in two for that broadcast. Either way, watch Pyrophoric Cult before The New Movie.

Continuity 4: The Ghost in the Shell (2026)

Science Saru's series is a separate adaptation of the 1989 to 1990 manga, with 10 episodes aired from 7 July to 8 September 2026. You do not need any earlier title, and no earlier title prepares you for it in particular. A new Science Saru Ghost in the Shell project was announced on 23 October 2026, with no title, format or date. We do not treat it as part of any line yet.

Release order vs viewing order

For most of the franchise release order and viewing order agree inside each line, so use the tables above. The one place to be careful is cross-line: do not mix lines in release order. Going from the 1995 film to Stand Alone Complex in 2002, to Innocence in 2004 and to Arise in 2013 will give you four different versions of Kusanagi, and the plot threads will not connect. If you do want the full tour, the list is: 1995, SAC, Innocence, 2nd GIG, Solid State Society, Arise, SAC_2045, 2026.

Manga order

The original Ghost in the Shell manga ran in Kodansha's Young Magazine from April 1989 to November 1990, and the first volume came out on 2 October 1991. Two follow-ups exist: Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface (nine issues in 1997) and Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor (published 17 July 2003). Start with the first book. The 2026 series covers that book, and Oshii's films borrow from it.

Where to watch

Streaming for older titles changes by country and month, and we could not confirm a current US listing for each one, so check a service such as JustWatch. What we can state: the 2026 series streams on Prime Video, and SAC_2045 is a Netflix original. Kodansha streamed all 26 episodes of Stand Alone Complex free on the official Ghost in the Shell YouTube channel in 2025, with each episode available for two days, so that was a limited run. Each linked catalogue page shows current details.

Questions people ask

What is the first Ghost in the Shell to watch?

The 1995 film, or Stand Alone Complex if you prefer a TV series. Neither requires the other.

Are all the Ghost in the Shell movies connected?

No. Oshii's two films form one line, and The New Movie belongs to Arise, which is separate.

Do I need to watch the 1995 film before Stand Alone Complex?

No. Stand Alone Complex is set in its own parallel world.

What is the difference between the 1995 film and Ghost in the Shell 2.0?

2.0 is a 2008 revised version with new audio and some updated 3DCG animation. The story is the same.

Is SAC_2045 canon with Stand Alone Complex?

It is set in the Stand Alone Complex world, 11 years after Solid State Society, so it is a later follow-up in that line.

How does the 2026 series fit?

It is a new adaptation of Shirow's manga, separate from everything before it.

Does Ghost in the Shell have an anime series?

Yes: Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG, Arise: Alternative Architecture, SAC_2045 and the 2026 series.

What about the 2017 live-action film?

It is a Hollywood film directed by Rupert Sanders, released on 31 March 2017 in the US. Reviews were mixed, and its casting drew whitewashing accusations. We have no sourced box-office figures, so we do not call it a flop.

How many episodes does Stand Alone Complex have?

26 in the first series and 26 in 2nd GIG, 52 in total.
