Gundam Watch Order: Where to Start and What to Watch Next
Gundam is about a dozen separate timelines, so you do not need to watch it all in order. Here is where to start, the Universal Century release order and every standalone series.

Gundam is not one story but about a dozen separate timelines, so you do not have to watch it all in order. For a first watch, start the Universal Century with the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, or jump into a self-contained series: The Witch from Mercury, Iron-Blooded Orphans, Gundam 00 or SEED.

Gundam is the biggest family in mecha anime, and it is usually credited with starting the "real robot" style, where giant machines behave like military hardware. This guide gives you a starting point by taste, then the release order for the main Universal Century (UC) line, then every standalone timeline with episode counts. Where a series is not in our catalogue we say so.

Where to start: four doors into Gundam

These are editorial picks, not official advice. Every one of them works without any other Gundam.

How Gundam is organized

Each timeline has its own calendar, cast and war, and starts with its own first series. Per Wikipedia, with episode counts that match MyAnimeList, the main ones are:

So for a general question like "do I have to watch Gundam in order?", the answer is no. Pick a timeline and stay inside it. Our Code Geass guide covers another Sunrise franchise if you want something with similar pace.

Universal Century watch order

UC is the original line and the largest. We recommend release order for a first watch, which is also what Mechabay's UC viewing guide (1 November 2025) recommends, saving strict chronological order for a rewatch once the connections are familiar. That is a matter of opinion, but the reasoning holds: later entries assume you know earlier characters, and older ones were made with older animation, so release order lets the story and the craft build together.

  1. Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980, 43 episodes). Setting year UC 0079. The One Year War. Films that retell it: I, II: Soldiers of Sorrow and III: Encounters in Space (1981-1982) are a shortcut, not a requirement.
  2. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985-1986, 50 episodes). UC 0087. Retold in three films, A New Translation I, II and III (2005-2006).
  3. Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986-1987, 47 episodes). UC 0088.
  4. Char's Counterattack (1988 film). UC 0093. Closes the core saga.
  5. 0080: War in the Pocket (1989, 6-episode OVA). A smaller story inside the One Year War.
  6. 0083: Stardust Memory (1991-1992, 13-episode OVA). Set between the original series and Zeta.
  7. Gundam F91 (1991 film). UC 0123, decades later.
  8. Victory Gundam (1993-1994, 51 episodes). UC 0153, the furthest point in this line.
  9. The 08th MS Team (1996-1999, 12-episode OVA), with the film A Battle with the Third Dimension. Ground war during UC 0079.
  10. Gundam Unicorn (2010-2014, 7-episode OVA). UC 0096, the sequel to Char's Counterattack. A TV edit, RE:0096, aired in 2016. A follow-up film, Narrative (2018, UC 0097), has no page on our site.
  11. The Origin (2015-2018, 6-episode OVA) and its TV compilation, Advent of the Red Comet (2019, 13 episodes). A prequel to the first series, so watch it after you know the original.
  12. Thunderbolt (2015-2017, 8 ONA episodes, across two seasons), plus the films December Sky and Bandit Flower. A dark One Year War side story.
  13. Hathaway (2021 film) and The Sorcery of Nymph Circe (2026 film). UC 0105; a third film has not been dated.

The 2024 Netflix series Requiem for Vengeance (six episodes, set on the European front of the One Year War) is also UC, but it has no page on our site yet.

Standalone timelines

These do not need anything above. Each has its own heading and a one-line verdict.

After Colony: Wing

Gundam Wing (1995-1996, 49 episodes) follows five pilots. Its sequel is the 3-part OVA Endless Waltz (1997), also cut as a 1998 special edition film. Extras: Operation Meteor and the 2025 anniversary video Operation 30th.

Future Century: G Gundam

Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994-1995, 49 episodes) is the tournament entry: robot fighting with a martial-arts feel. The least like anything else in the franchise.

After War: Gundam X

After War Gundam X (1996, 39 episodes). A rebuilding-after-the-war story. A good second or third pick.

Correct Century: Turn A Gundam

Turn A Gundam (1999-2000, 50 episodes). A slow, thoughtful series with a very different design look. Not an entry point for most newcomers.

Cosmic Era: SEED

Is SEED connected to the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam? No, the Cosmic Era is separate. SEED (2002-2003, 50 episodes) continues in SEED Destiny (2004-2005, 50 episodes) and the film SEED Freedom (2024). Extra material includes C.E. 73: Stargazer, After-Phase Between the Stars, and special edition cuts such as SEED Special Edition and Destiny Special Edition, with Final Plus: The Chosen Future. Watch SEED, then Destiny, then Freedom.

Anno Domini: Gundam 00

Gundam 00 (2007-2008) and Second Season (2008-2009) make 50 episodes, followed by the film A Wakening of the Trailblazer (2010). Recap extras: Special Edition and Tenshi-tachi no Kiseki.

Advanced Generation and Regild Century

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE (2011-2012, 49 episodes) and Gundam Reconguista in G (2014-2015, 26 episodes) have no TV page on our site. A film version of Reconguista exists; its fourth part is Love That Cries Out in Battle.

Post Disaster: Iron-Blooded Orphans

Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015-2016, 25 episodes) and its 2nd Season (2016-2017, 25 episodes). Child soldiers, a mercenary company, a bleak tone. Watch both parts.

Ad Stella: The Witch from Mercury

Prologue (2022), then Season 1 (2022) and Season 2 (2023), 24 episodes in all. Set at a school, with a corporate-politics plot. The easiest modern entry.

Build line

The Build series is a lighter, hobby-driven branch about building and battling with model kits: Build Fighters (2013-2014, 25 episodes), Try, the short GM's Counterattack, then Build Divers Re:RISE and its 2nd Season. It is playful, with many cameos, and not a good first Gundam.

GQuuuuuuX and other recent releases

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is an alternate version of the 1979 UC. A recap film, Beginning, opened in Japan on 17 January 2025, and the 12-episode TV series began in April 2025. Do you need the original first? Reviewers disagree: some fan guides say the first episode of the 1979 series is enough, since the story diverges there, while Gizmodo's coverage notes that it leans heavily on the original. Our advice: watch at least the first third of Mobile Suit Gundam first, or you will miss the point of what changed.

Also recent: the second Hathaway film opened in Japan on 30 January 2026 and came to Netflix outside Japan on 31 August 2026, and the six-episode Requiem for Vengeance (2024) is a Netflix release.

Announced but not out: a TV series called Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is slated for 2027, according to Comics Beat's report of the San Diego Comic-Con showcase on 23 July 2026. Reports from May 2026 mention a SEED Freedom Zero theatrical project and a live-action Netflix film, but we have not found official dates, so treat both as unconfirmed.

Where to watch

Streaming rights move around, so this is only what we could confirm on 3 November 2026. The first Hathaway film reached Netflix outside Japan on 1 July 2021, and the second on 31 August 2026, according to AniTrendz. Requiem for Vengeance is a Netflix series. GQuuuuuuX streams on Amazon Prime Video worldwide, per Wikipedia and Otaku USA Magazine. We could not confirm the current home of the older series, so check JustWatch for your region.
