Background
The Fable is a crime comedy based on Katsuhisa Minami's manga, which began in Weekly Young Magazine in November 2014. Its hero is a legendary hitman called Fable. His Boss orders him to live as an ordinary person, Akira Sato, for a year and not to kill anyone. The manga has since continued with a second part, The Second Contact, and a third, The Third Secret, which is still running.
Season 1 aired from April to September 2024 and ran 25 episodes. A second season was confirmed on April 1, 2026, and a teaser trailer followed in mid-September. The teaser cuts from Yamaoka's face to a handgun being loaded, a darker tone than the daily-life comedy of the early episodes.
What it means
The Yamaoka arc is where the series turns from comedy to a real threat. Yamaoka is an executive in the same organization that trained Akira and, according to his official introduction, was born without the ability to feel fear. Choosing this arc first signals that the anime will lean into the darker, more adult side of the manga.
The director is a point of interest for mecha fans. Takahashi is best known for Armored Trooper Votoms and Fang of the Sun Dougram, two of the grittiest real robot series. It is a seinen crime story, and it fits the adult action we cover in our seinen and mecha sections. If you are new to the term, see what does seinen mean.
For viewers in Southeast Asia, the date above is the Japanese broadcast only. Season 1 was on Disney+ in Japan according to the official site, but that notice refers to Season 1, and one French outlet reports Disney+ for Season 2 without a second source. Availability varies by region, so check your local services closer to January. It also lands in a busy season: see our Winter 2027 anime guide for the other premieres.
