Vinland Saga season 3 status and watch order
No season 3 is announced and the creator says it is not in progress. The watch order, manga status and what to try next.

Vinland Saga season 3 is not confirmed, and it is not in production. On 22 October 2026 the manga creator, Makoto Yukimura, wrote that the project "is not currently in progress." The anime watch order is short: Season 1 (2019), then Season 2 (2023). Both are complete, and the manga is the only way to go further.

This guide covers the watch order, what the creator has actually said about a third season, and what to read or watch while you wait. Nothing here is rumor presented as fact. Where we could not check something with a reliable source, we say so.

Is there a Vinland Saga season 3?

Not officially. No studio, release date, cast or staff list has been announced for a third season, and there is no cancellation notice either. What exists is a short reply from the author.

According to Yahoo Entertainment (23 October 2026), a fan asked Yukimura about season 3 on X. He answered: "Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress." Kotaku and other outlets reported the same reply.

This is not the first time the question came up. In January 2026 a rumor said season 3 was already in production. GamesRadar and Anime Corner reported that Yukimura answered that the information "has not reached" him. So twice in one year the person who wrote the story has not confirmed a sequel.

What this means in plain terms: do not trust any video, post or site that gives a season 3 date. Some search results still say "officially set to return" or name a year. None of them cite a studio or production committee announcement. Until the anime staff or publisher announce something, treat every date as invented.

Vinland Saga watch order

There is one correct order, and it is release order. The two seasons tell one continuous story with the same lead, Thorfinn.

  1. Vinland Saga (Season 1), 2019, 24 episodes. Animated by Wit Studio and directed by Shuhei Yabuta. It follows Thorfinn as a boy who joins a band of mercenaries to take revenge for his father. Expect war, raids and graphic violence.
  2. Vinland Saga Season 2, 2023, 24 episodes. Animated by MAPPA, again directed by Yabuta, aired January to June 2023. The tone changes: it is slower, quieter and about a man trying to live differently. It reportedly adapts the manga's Farmland arc (also called the Slave arc).

That is the full list. We found no movies, OVAs or recap specials that you need, and we have not verified any, so we do not list any. If a streaming page offers a "special," check what it is before you count it as story.

Season 1 or Season 2: do I need both?

Yes. Season 2 starts after a time jump and leans on everything Season 1 builds. If you skip to Season 2, the character work will feel unearned. If you find Season 1 slow in the middle, that is normal: the show is built so that Season 2 pays it off.

Where to watch

Season 1 first streamed worldwide on Amazon Prime Video and later came to Netflix. Season 2 was a Netflix and Crunchyroll simulcast outside a few regions, according to Wikipedia. Streaming rights change often, so availability varies by region. Check the services in your country before you plan a marathon.

The manga: how far past the anime does it go?

This is the part most season 3 articles skip. The manga is finished. Serialization started in 2005 and ended with chapter 220 in Monthly Afternoon on 25 July 2025. The last collected volume, Volume 29, came out in Japan on 22 September 2025. Kodansha USA publishes the English edition.

So a third season would not be waiting on the author. The story is complete on paper, which is why fans want it adapted. The delay, if there is one, sits with the anime side: studio, staff and production committee, none of which has said anything publicly.

Spoiler note for the next two paragraphs. Only broad story shape, no plot twists.

Fans commonly expect a next season to cover the "Eastern Expedition" part of the story, where Thorfinn and his group leave the farm and travel. We could not confirm this with an official source, so treat it as expectation, not plan. The ending of the manga is a topic of heavy discussion online; we do not spoil it here.

Should you read the manga now?

If you finished Season 2 and want more, yes. Reasons:

  • It is the only place the story continues.
  • It is complete, so you will not be left hanging.
  • The art is more detailed in places than the anime can afford, and some scenes are staged differently.

Where to start is the one question we cannot answer with confidence. Sources disagree on the exact volume and chapter range Season 2 covers: one says volumes 9 to 14, and chapter counts differ between reviews. The safe method is to find the last scene of Season 2, then open the manga a few chapters earlier and skim forward until it matches. You lose a few minutes and avoid both gaps and repeats.

What to watch while you wait

If you came for the mix of history, violence and a serious look at what violence costs, these are close in spirit. All are for adults.

  • Berserk (2016) and Berserk (1997): medieval dark fantasy, much darker, with a heavy focus on war and what it does to people. See our Berserk watch order before starting, because the versions differ.
  • Mononoke: not historical in the Viking sense, but a mature, slow and visually bold story that rewards patience.

Two other well-known titles fit this mood, Golden Kamuy and Kingdom, but they are not in our catalogue yet, so we link nothing for them here. Browse the seinen anime page for more adult-oriented series. If the word seinen is new to you, read what seinen means.

Why the wait is long

Reporting around the October 2026 reply points to busy schedules: MAPPA, which made Season 2, has large projects such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man in production, according to Yahoo. That is context, not an official reason. Nobody involved has said why there is no season 3 plan, and we will not guess.

What would change this: an announcement from the anime's official channels, the publisher, or the production committee. We update this page when one appears, and we check the date at the bottom each time.

Questions people ask

Will Vinland Saga season 3 happen?

Unknown. It has not been announced, and the creator said in October 2026 that the project is not currently in progress. That is not the same as cancelled.

When is the Vinland Saga season 3 release date?

There is no release date. Pages that show one are guessing. A GamesRadar piece from February 2026 speculated about 2027, but the creator's later reply makes that speculation unreliable.

What studio animated Vinland Saga?

Wit Studio made Season 1 (2019) and MAPPA made Season 2 (2023). Shuhei Yabuta directed both.

How many seasons of Vinland Saga are there?

Two, with 24 episodes each.

Is the Vinland Saga manga finished?

Yes. The last chapter, number 220, ran on 25 July 2025, and the final volume, Volume 29, was released in Japan on 22 September 2025.

How does Vinland Saga end?

The anime ends where Season 2 ends. The manga has its own full ending, which we do not reveal here. Read it in the manga if you want the answer without a summary.

Do I need to read the manga before season 3?

No. A future season would adapt the manga, so reading it is optional. It is only a way to get the story now.

Is Vinland Saga appropriate for all ages?

No. It contains graphic violence, slavery, abuse and war themes. It is made for adults and older teens.
