Hellsing Ultimate is a 10-episode adult vampire OVA (2006 to 2012) that adapts Kouta Hirano's manga from start to finish. It is worth watching if you want gothic horror and large-scale action and can accept thin characters and uneven animation. The ending is a siege of London, followed by a long gap and a quiet return.

What is Hellsing Ultimate about?
The Hellsing Organization is a British group that fights vampires and other supernatural threats to England. It is led by Sir Integra Hellsing and protected by her butler Walter C. Dornez and by Alucard, a powerful vampire bound to serve the Hellsing family. A former police officer, Seras Victoria, joins them after Alucard turns her into a vampire.
The main threat is Millennium, a Nazi remnant that is building an army of vampires. The war between Millennium, Hellsing and the Vatican section Iscariot ends in London. Millennium's real aim is to destroy Alucard.
The tone is closer to a horror action film than a drama. Each episode is long, loud and bloody. You do not need to know Dracula or the manga before starting.
Why it is not "season 2" of Hellsing
Hellsing Ultimate is not a sequel to the older Hellsing TV series from 2001. That series (13 episodes, studio Gonzo, aired October 2001 to January 2002) uses the same characters but tells a different story. Hellsing Ultimate was made later to follow the manga more closely, and the producer chose the OVA format to avoid TV time limits. You can watch either one first. Our watch order guide explains the choice.
The ending explained (spoilers)
Spoiler warning: this section describes the final episode. Skip to "Is Hellsing Ultimate worth watching?" if you have not finished it.
What happens in the last episode
Episode 10, "Hellsing X", closes the Battle of London. Alucard has absorbed the blood of the millions who died in the city. That gives him near endless regeneration and a new army of the dead. This is exactly what Millennium's leader, the Major, was waiting for.
On the Major's orders, his catlike servant Schrödinger kills himself and falls into the river of blood. Alucard now holds countless souls, and Schrödinger's is mixed in with them. The idea comes from the Schrödinger's cat thought experiment: Alucard can no longer tell which soul is his own, so he is neither alive, dead nor undead, and he vanishes.
Meanwhile Seras and Integra fight through the Major's airship. According to a detailed fan recap, Seras destroys the Major's body, which turns out to be a cyborg, and Integra finishes him with a shot to the head. Integra loses an eye in the fight. Walter, who had betrayed Hellsing, is left in a burning laboratory.
The 30 year gap and Alucard's return
The story then jumps forward by about 30 years. Integra is older and worried about the future of the Hellsing Organization. She also misses Alucard. One night he reappears in her room, and he explains that he had to destroy every extra soul inside him, 3,425,867 by the fan recap's count, until only himself was left. Once he did that, he could exist "everywhere and nowhere" and return to his master.
What the ending means
The point is that Alucard's identity, not his strength, is what Millennium attacked. He cannot be beaten in a fight, so the Major makes him unable to be himself. He wins by choosing to remember who he is and removing everything else. The final scene is also a promise: as long as Integra lives, he is still hers.
Reception of the story's last stretch is mixed. Critics noted that the manga's finale was rushed, and the author has said he "got a little hasty" after volume 8. The OVA follows that ending closely, and one fan site notes that its cartoonish last scenes match the manga art. Do not expect new answers: the series leaves the Hellsing Organization's future open.
How it differs from the manga and the 2001 series
| Hellsing Ultimate (OVA) | Hellsing (2001 TV) | Manga | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 10 episodes, feature length | 13 TV episodes | 10 volumes |
| Story | Follows the manga closely | Same cast, original story | The source |
| Studios | Three studios across 6 years | Gonzo | Not applicable |
| Ending | Siege of London, then the return | Different from the manga | The ending Hirano planned |
Ultimate is not frame for frame. One example is a scene where the Major wonders whether Integra or Seras will kill him, which is not in the manga. In general, though, it is the closest anime version. The manga ran in Young King OURs from 1997 to 2008, sold about 4 million copies worldwide, and was published in English by Dark Horse Comics. A three-volume deluxe edition followed in 2020 and 2021.
The episodes at a glance
The OVAs came out in three production blocks, so animation style shifts. Spoiler-free summary:
- Episodes 1 to 4 (10 February 2006 to 22 February 2008, Satelight): the setup: the Hellsing Organization, Seras's place in it and the first signs of Millennium.
- Episodes 5 to 7 (21 November 2008 to 23 December 2009, Madhouse): the threat from Millennium grows.
- Episodes 8 to 10 (27 July 2011 to 26 December 2012, Graphinica): the Battle of London and the ending.
The final three episodes came out after a gap of about 19 months from the previous block, which is why newer viewers sometimes feel a jump in style. A short prequel, Hellsing: The Dawn (3 episodes of 6 to 9 minutes, 2011 to 2012), was released alongside the last volumes. It is optional.
Is Hellsing Ultimate worth watching?
Yes, if you like dark, violent, stylish action. It has strong set pieces, a memorable lead and a villain many fans love. If you want deep characters and tight pacing, it may disappoint: one community review summed it up as "a stylish bloodbath" without deep writing, and the final block of episodes is rougher visually.
- Good fit: adults who enjoy gothic horror, big battles and over-the-top villains.
- Poor fit: viewers who dislike gore or want a slow character drama.
- Content notes: constant graphic violence. It is an adult series, listed as TV-MA by Rotten Tomatoes. Do not start it with children around.

Where to watch
Funimation held the North American rights for both series and, according to Wikipedia, both moved to Crunchyroll in 2022. Availability varies by region, and it also changes over time, so check the listings for your country before you subscribe. Viewers in the Philippines and elsewhere in Southeast Asia should search a service's local catalogue instead of assuming a title is there. The OVA has both Japanese and English audio.
