Gundam SEED watch order: SEED, Destiny, FREEDOM and what comes next
Watch Gundam SEED, then SEED Destiny, then FREEDOM. Where Stargazer, the Special Editions and the 2027 prequel FREEDOM ZERO fit.

Watch Mobile Suit Gundam SEED first (50 episodes), then SEED Destiny (50 episodes), then the 2024 film SEED FREEDOM. Add SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer after Destiny if you want a side story. The new prequel film SEED FREEDOM ZERO opens in Japan on 15 January 2027 and fits between Destiny and FREEDOM.

The short answer: SEED watch order

Gundam SEED is one of the easier Gundam timelines to follow, because the main story is a straight line. The whole franchise has many separate timelines, but SEED sits in its own "Cosmic Era" (C.E.) and you do not need any older Gundam show first. If you are still choosing a starting point for the wider franchise, read our Gundam watch order and Gundam timelines explained. Fans of mecha anime will find SEED a good entry point.

Gundam SEED watch order at a glance

  1. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002 to 2003, 50 TV episodes): the war between Naturals and Coordinators. Start here.
  2. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004 to 2005, 50 TV episodes): the direct sequel, set two years later.
  3. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer (2006, 3 short web episodes): an optional side story set in the Destiny period. Watch it after Destiny.
  4. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (film, 2024, 124 minutes): the story one year after Destiny.
  5. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO (film, Japan 15 January 2027): a prequel set between Destiny and FREEDOM. Not released yet.

Optional extras are covered below: the Special Edition compilation films, Destiny Final Plus, and a short epilogue called After-Phase.

Release order or story order?

For the TV shows and FREEDOM these are the same. The only wrinkle is Stargazer, which takes place during the Destiny years. Most fans watch it after Destiny so it does not interrupt the main plot. Stargazer is set after the Break the World incident in C.E. 73, according to Wikipedia, which is a Destiny event, so finish Destiny before starting it if you want to avoid spoilers.

FREEDOM ZERO adds a new choice. Story order will be Destiny, FREEDOM ZERO, FREEDOM. Release order is Destiny, FREEDOM, then ZERO. Because it is a prequel that follows Shinn Asuka, our advice is to watch FREEDOM first and ZERO after, since the film was written alongside FREEDOM. This is our editorial view, and we will revisit it once ZERO has been reviewed by people who have seen it.

1. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002 to 2003)

The original TV series aired in Japan from 5 October 2002 to 27 September 2003 and has 50 episodes. It follows Kira Yamato, a Coordinator who ends up piloting a prototype mobile suit while a war splits humanity into two sides. It is a good starting point for adults who want large-scale war drama, rivalries and mecha action in a familiar Gundam format.

Two versions exist. The original broadcast has 50 episodes. The HD Remaster, which first aired in 2012 and sharpens the picture, leaves out two recap episodes (14 and 26), so it runs about 48 episodes. Both tell the same story. If your service offers the HD Remaster, you lose nothing by watching it.

2. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004 to 2005)

Destiny aired from 9 October 2004 to 1 October 2005, also with 50 episodes, and is set two years after SEED. You need SEED first: it follows the same world and brings back the main cast. Treat it as the second half of the story.

The remastered version aired in Japan on Animax starting 3 February 2024 in four weekly blocks, as a lead-up to the film. It has 50 episodes, but one episode ("Refrain") is dropped and the finale is rebuilt from material in Destiny Final Plus: The Chosen Future, according to Wikipedia. If you have a choice, either version works. Some fans prefer the original ending, others the revised one, so that is a matter of taste.

3. SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer (2006, optional)

Stargazer is a three-episode web series that started on the Bandai Channel site in July 2006 and came to DVD in November 2006. Each episode is roughly 15 to 18 minutes. It is a side story about a research project and an attempt to steal its data, so it adds world detail rather than new character arcs. It is safe to skip, and nothing in FREEDOM depends on it.

4. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (2024)

FREEDOM opened in Japanese theaters on 26 January 2024, runs 124 minutes and is directed by Mitsuo Fukuda. It is set in May C.E. 75, a year after Destiny ends, with Lacus Clyne leading the new peacekeeping group COMPASS. Two extended Special Edition cuts with more than 500 updated cuts also played in Japan in autumn 2024, per Wikipedia. Everyone who finishes Destiny should see this film: it is the true continuation.

FREEDOM is the entry with the most demand across Southeast Asia in search data. Where to stream it depends on your country, so see the streaming section below.

5. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO (15 January 2027)

FREEDOM ZERO is a prequel film that fills the gap between Destiny and FREEDOM. According to coverage of the official announcements, it centers on Shinn Asuka and the formation of COMPASS, and the date for Japan is 15 January 2027. A North American theatrical release was reported for February 2027, and no wider international date has been confirmed. Details of the plot have not been shared, so the film has no spoilers to avoid yet. See our FREEDOM ZERO page for updates.

The extras: Special Editions, Final Plus and After-Phase

Our advice: skip the Special Editions unless you are short on time. They compress a lot of character material. If you want a shortcut, Destiny Special Edition is the more interesting one because of its different viewpoint.

Where to watch Gundam SEED

The official Gundam site lists streaming options per title on its series page. Crunchyroll is reported to carry SEED and FREEDOM in some regions, and other services carry some of the series elsewhere, but availability varies by region and changes often. Check the services in your own country before you plan a marathon. We do not state that any title is streaming in a specific country without an official source.

Also arriving in Winter 2027

FREEDOM ZERO is one of several winter titles we are tracking. See our Winter 2027 anime hub for the full list. Other catalogue pages for that season include Golden Kamuy: Runaway Train Arc, Sakamoto Days Season 2, The Fable Season 2, Sekiro: No Defeat, Historie, Inherit the Winds and ghost: end of night. Dates for these are reported by schedule sites and may change. For more adult-oriented shows, browse our seinen anime page.

Questions people ask

What order should I watch Gundam SEED in?

Gundam SEED, then SEED Destiny, then SEED FREEDOM. Stargazer is optional after Destiny, and FREEDOM ZERO (2027) fits between Destiny and FREEDOM in story order.

Which timeline is Gundam SEED?

The Cosmic Era (C.E.) timeline. It is separate from the Universal Century shows, so you do not need to watch the older series first.

How many Gundam SEED series are there?

Two TV series (SEED and SEED Destiny), plus the Stargazer web series, the FREEDOM film and the upcoming FREEDOM ZERO film. Compilation films and an alternate finale also exist.

Do I need to watch SEED Destiny before FREEDOM?

Yes. FREEDOM is set a year after Destiny and uses its characters and events.

Should I watch the Special Edition films instead of the TV series?

We suggest the full TV series. The compilation films shorten the story and change some scenes.

Is the HD Remaster the same as the original?

Mostly. SEED's remaster drops two recap episodes, and Destiny's remaster drops one episode and rebuilds the finale, according to Wikipedia episode lists.

Is Gundam SEED a good place to start the franchise?

Many fans say yes, because it is a self-contained story. See our Gundam watch order for other starting points.
