Background
The series follows a different group of characters in the same world as the Death Stranding video games, which Hideo Kojima created, and it was first announced in November 2025 with a short teaser. A separate anime film, tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito, is in development at ABC Animation Studio, so the franchise now has two anime projects in progress. Ubukata is a prolific science-fiction writer, and the new staff list also includes several people who worked on recent high-profile action anime.
What it means
For a game franchise known for long cutscenes and heavy atmosphere, hand-drawn animation is a deliberate choice, and the staff list suggests a design-driven production rather than a quick tie-in. The involvement of Ubukata points to a plot-heavy, science-fiction approach, while E&H Production's recent action work suggests the series will not be static. Disney+ gives it a global release, which is helpful for a property with a worldwide audience. The unknowns are the same ones as before: the release month, the number of episodes and how closely the story needs knowledge of the games. Until a premiere date arrives, expect more staff and cast news in small steps. Because the series has been confirmed for a worldwide Disney+ release, viewers in most regions should be able to watch it without waiting for a separate license, although a release schedule by country has not been published.
Fans of adult-oriented science fiction should note that the teaser does not show any story detail, so judgments about tone should wait for a longer trailer. Anyone who wants context before 2027 can play or read about the games, but the production appears designed so that newcomers can follow it.
