What was announced

The new casting was posted around October 20 to 21, 2026, and it is listed on the film's official site. Each actor also sent a short comment.

  • Kenjiro Tsuda plays Moby Dick, a figure who takes an interest in the heroine, Nike.
  • Hiroki Yasumoto plays Karate, a childhood friend of Mas.
  • Hiroshi Kamiya plays Ito, another friend of Mas.

They join Mayu Hotta as Nike and Issei Takahashi as Mas, who were revealed in August. The English romanization of the heroine's name varies by outlet (Nike or Neekei).

Background

The story is set in a near future where work is no longer necessary. At 18, everyone is sorted into people the world needs and people it does not. Nike, 15, has already been chosen and holds a privileged post, yet she keeps looking for a place that feels real. Her path crosses with Mas, a man carrying a deep loss.

Natsume wrote and directs, with original character concepts by manga artist Natsume Ono, whom he worked with on ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. Madhouse handles the animation and Bandai Namco Filmworks distributes. The rock band Hitsujibungaku wrote six songs for the film, and Ohzora Kimishima composed the score. A companion manga by Himiko runs in Young Ace.

The film has already played abroad. It had its world premiere at the Sitges festival in Spain on October 9, 2026, then screened at Busan on October 13 and at the Tokyo International Film Festival on November 1, according to the official site. Natsume has described it as a road movie where the heroine stays in place while other people come to her.

What it means

Natsume is best known for One Punch Man season 1, Sonny Boy and ACCA. This is his first fully original feature, so the cast list matters: Tsuda, Yasumoto and Kamiya are all veteran names, which suggests a serious push for a wide Japanese release.

For international viewers the open question is access. We found no announcement of an overseas distributor or streaming service, so availability varies by region and nothing is confirmed for Southeast Asia or the US. Festival screenings may be the first chance outside Japan.

It also lands in a crowded season. See our Winter 2027 hub for the rest of the lineup, including mecha such as Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom Zero and sequels like Sakamoto Days season 2.
