The Sekiro anime, Sekiro: No Defeat, is an eight-episode TV adaptation of FromSoftware's 2019 game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It is reported to start on Crunchyroll in January 2027. You do not need to play the game first, because the series retells the same story, with more scenes than the Japanese film.

Quick facts
- Format: 8 weekly TV episodes, following a Japanese theatrical version that opened on September 4, 2026.
- Premiere: January 2027 on Crunchyroll. No exact day has been announced yet.
- Studio: Animation by Qzil.la, produced by ARCH, directed by Kenichi Kutsuna.
- Source: the game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, set in Sengoku-era Japan.
- Content notes: strong violence and dark fantasy horror. This is a series for adults and older teens.
What is Sekiro: No Defeat?
The game follows a shinobi known as Wolf, who is sworn to protect a young lord called Kuro, the Divine Heir. The Ashina clan is under attack, and its leaders turn to dangerous power to survive. The anime keeps that setup. The voice cast includes Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro, Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina and Tetsuo Kanao as Isshin Ashina.
The project was announced at Gamescom in August 2025. It was first expected in 2026, and that is why some older articles still show the wrong year.
Film, TV series, or both?
This is the part that confuses most people searching for the Sekiro anime release date. There are two versions.
- The theatrical version opened in Japan on September 4, 2026 for a limited run that was later extended.
- The TV series runs for eight episodes. According to Anime Corner, the team first developed an eight-episode series and then released an edited film in advance. The producer apologized for not saying earlier that the film was an edited version.
Crunchyroll says the series includes additional content beyond the film. So the TV version is not just the movie cut into eight parts. It follows the film's story and adds scenes and cuts that were not in the theaters. A feature-length runtime for the film has not been confirmed in the sources we checked, so we do not give one here.
Anime vs game: what changes
| Game (2019) | Anime (2027) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | A long action game, often tens of hours | 8 episodes |
| Who decides | You fight every boss, try again after each loss and choose your path | Fixed story, one path |
| Look | 3D game graphics | Hand-drawn animation |
| Detail | World told through items, ruins and optional characters | Likely trimmed to the main story, with the series adding scenes beyond the film |
| Where | PC and consoles | Crunchyroll, in supported regions |
The game's famous difficulty cannot carry over to a show. What an anime can add is time with the characters. Wolf barely speaks in the game, and the series gets room to show his bond with Kuro. Which exact story parts and endings the anime covers has not been stated, so we will not guess. This page avoids major spoilers.
Hand-drawn, and no generative AI
Crunchyroll describes the series as fully hand-drawn. Studio Qzil.la's earlier AI-related work led to online debate, and Anime Corner reports that the production committee officially said there would be no generative AI in the anime.
Where to watch, including the Philippines
Crunchyroll will stream it worldwide except Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus. That list does not name the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore, but availability varies by region, so check the Crunchyroll catalogue in your own country when January 2027 gets close. We have not confirmed a local air time or dub for any country.
Should you watch it if you never played the game?
Yes, if you like samurai action and dark fantasy. The story is self-contained and the game's world is explained as you go. If you plan to play later, expect story spoilers, so decide in advance. If you liked Berserk or other dark fantasy in our seinen section, the tone will feel familiar: bleak, bloody and serious.
Content notes: expect strong violence and horror imagery. It is not an ecchi series.

The main characters, without spoilers
Wolf is the shinobi at the center, a quiet fighter whose loyalty drives the story. Kuro is the young lord he protects, and the bond between them is the heart of the project, according to Crunchyroll's own wording about "Wolf and Kuro's journey". Genichiro Ashina and Isshin Ashina are the powerful figures of the clan whose choices set the war in motion. The cast list also names Emma (Shizuka Ito), the Sculptor (Jin Urayama), Hanbei (Akimitsu Takase) and Owl (Takaya Hashi). We do not say how large their roles are, since that has not been confirmed.
What to do before January
If you want the full experience, there are three easy paths:
- Just wait. Go in fresh and let the anime tell the story. This is the safest choice for a spoiler-free first run.
- Play the game first. You will recognize places and people, and you will see which parts the anime chooses to keep. Be ready for a hard game.
- Watch a trailer. Crunchyroll's official trailers show the art style and fight animation, which helps you decide if the tone suits you.
Whatever you choose, remember that the TV series is the longer version. If you saw the Japanese film, you should expect familiar story beats with extra material. If you only see the TV series, you are seeing the version the team first planned.
