Background

The story opens in June 1863 in Kyoto. A man with no memory is brought to the headquarters of the Mibu Roshigumi, the group that later became the Shinsengumi. Okita Soji takes him in, and he is given the name Tachikawa Jinsuke. As the group rises during the turmoil of the late Edo period, the official synopsis (via MyAnimeList) says that once Jinsuke recovers all his memories, his world changes.

It is an original anime, but not a story from nowhere. Writer Yutaka Narui is the founder of the theater company Caramelbox, whose "Tachikawa Jinsuke" stage series includes a Shinsengumi play that has a large following. Kawamura previously directed GAMBA and Friends.

What it means

The Shinsengumi are a familiar subject, so the angle matters. Here the viewer's guide is an outsider who knows nothing, which is a classic way to explain a complicated era to a new audience. If you have only met Okita Soji through games or other anime, this is built to be an easy way in.

The look is the other thing to watch. animeMANGA reports that the series uses Live2D technology for its visual presentation, and the trailer frames have a flat, clean style. Whether it works over a full cour will only be clear once episodes air. The episode count has not been announced.

If you live outside Japan, there is no announced streaming partner yet, and availability varies by region. Check official channels closer to January.
